    Interactive documentary

    participatory culture
    technology in everyday life
    Journalism
    virtual worlds
    Media archeology
    identity

The last few years I have been interested in using film and visual methods for research purposes. Last year I made a documentary about flexible friendship and couchsurfing. I have always been interested in how people use technology in their everyday life, how they form social relationships that are mediated through technology. Also interested in how people from different cultures use technology and how they look at it. The myths that surround technology use also interests me.

I don’t exactly know what I want to do, still figuring that out. I know I like to work in journalism and new media. Also I’m starting to discover interactive documentaries and looking into the possibilities for an internship in that field.

    Augmented reality
    Gamification
    Digital play
    Data visualization

First of all I am very interested in the technology that new media is based on. However it is not only about HOW something works, but especially about which trends and “hypes” arise from this technology and how does this affect society and human life. As I want to establish my own business one day, it is very important for me to stay up-to-date about future trends and new, innovative areas to implement them. Hence one question I could imagine to investigate during my master studies (internship, thesis?) is about why some of those trends have long-term effects, whereas others are just short-term hypes (--> Keyword sustainability!).

    Participatory culture
    Sustainability
    Journalism & publishing industry

One approach that fascinates me in this context is the concept of crowdfunding and crowdsourcing. I am writing a paper about “gamification in journalism” at the moment, and during my research I read about the use of crowdsourcing to support the work of investigative journalists, visually designed with game elements. I don’t want to work as a journalist later, but I could imagine creating new media related concepts for the publishing industry in future. Hence the implementation of new media in this specific field interests me.

    techno-politics
    network theory
    digital visual culture

As a founder/curator of a media festival that focuses on young media artists My research often focuses on digital practice with an art historical perspective. But I am also very much interested in creative technology and how to find a balance between artistic and commercial practice. And which role a festival plays in this development.
One of the discussions I find ofte stumble upon is how the virtual and the’ real’ are intertwined. Therefore I suppose the keyword of media philosophy is in place.
I also mentioned Techno-politics because I am interested to approach digital culture from a broad perspective. During my bachelor I did an internship at Virtueel Platform and helped organizing How Do You Do. I enjoy bringing parties to the table and connect people with different backgrounds. So maybe a bit of network theory also applies.

Hello New Media scholars. I am looking for a commercial internship that will leave room for research.

    digital visual culture
    urban culture
    urban informatics
    participatory culture
New media advertising is my primary interest and it encompasses the keywords listed above. I would like to work with a reclamebureau to understand how advertisers are using new media in unprecedented ways. Understanding how the digital visual culture is impacted by these marketing executions is original research that will lead to novel conclusions. Advertising is particularly related to urban culture and urban informatics because of the ubiquity of technology. I want to understand not only how an agency conceptualizes the urban space, but how they combine this understanding with the requirements of the client. The type of advertising execution I would like most to study is ambient/outdoor. My target companies to reach out to for this project are W+K Amsterdam (www.wkamst.com), Ogilvy Amsterdam (www.ogilvy.nl), Grey Amsterdam (www.grey.nl), and Arnold Amsterdam (www.arnoldamsterdam.com)

    corporeal media
    interface culture & design
    new media literacy
My second interest is e-Commerce fashion. I’m in the early planning stages of a ZZP concept that combines technology and fashion to help local dames-/mannenmode winkeliers grow their brand and their market share. Ideally, this concept would eventually grow into a way to provide consumers with a way to understand if the clothes at a particular shop will fit them. On that note, there is a UK company Poikos who is currently working at the StartUpBootCamp in Amsterdam. The company is pioneering a body measurement system that uses consumer-grade hardware to take accurate (+/- 1cm) measurements to help inform consumers of their size and suggest sizes of clothing that will fit these consumers. If working with a large advertising firm doesn’t work out, I’d like to contact Poikos to see if I can do research on their business model. I am particularly interested in how their technology will match up with my business concept. I want to understand how they chose eCommerce as the first market to pursue with this type of technology.

Thank you for your consideration, and in advance for helping me find a place at these target companies.
    Kimberly

    IN A NUTSHELL
I would like to become a researcher/teacher in the field of new media one day. I was very much inspired by the talks at the News in a Multipolar World Symposium, so I already have half an idea for the masterthesis, focusing on my home country of Hungary with the above mentioned research interests in mind.

As I read through the list I see a lot of interesting topics. My main interests are: gamification, playfulness, game studies, mobile, accessibility, e-learning, usability, interaction design, and interface culture & design.

One of the main reasons I started this Master is because someday I want to become a teacher. My background is in web design and web development, at the moment I work as a website accessibility inspector. The last years my interest has grown in mobile (tablets / applications) and gamification. I’m not a gamer but I’m interested in gamification.

I would like to do my internship at my current job. I work for a foundation which is committed to the accessibility in the ICT field, mainly websites and applications. So I would like to devote my internship to the accessibility of the internet (and applications). Maybe in combination with gamification or e-learning.

    MA Thesis
I'm a born and raised city kid and see the urban environment as my playground/canvas. Skateboarding, football and making artworks out of boring prints (I've got an ethical code for myself: never paint on walls, but paint on 'temporary' posters instead). I'm an great admirer of Banksy and other street-artists who uses their creativity to give certain areas a different meaning. Ambient environment, smart use of lights to steer the crowded public in the hallways of a subway/trainstation. The affordances of an urban environment gives us possibilities to make subtle statements. Persuasive environments and little games that change your attitude and behavior in an environment. Yes, I truly am a city kid.

    Internship
I currently work as a freelancer at the Hogeschool Utrecht as a lecturer and course coordinator of the course 'Creative Interactive' at the faculty of Communication and Journalism. The study program of Communication and Multimedia Design has a hard time to profile themselves as an applied creativity program. So I suggested a research on participation culture, interface culture and design, educational design as a part of their branding strategy.

I hope you find the right tutor for me :-).

    Thank you.

    Name: Jelle Stuip
    Student# 4005724

    Keywords and motivation:

    (video-)games, gamification
I’m currently writing and researching for the game studies course on the subject of the (possible) use of gamification in video games. I like playing video games a lot and you could call me a ‘gamer’. Researching games and gaming was no subject during my previous education (BA Media & Culture, UvA), and therefore it was one of the reasons for doing my masters in Utrecht.

    Online privacy
Online privacy is becoming more and more an important issue. One of the recent major developments is the EU cookie law, which forces every website owner to ask permission to use cookies. I have written a paper on cookies and especially on flash-cookies, and find the material (of which the use of cookies is of course only a small part) very interesting, especially because it is very multi-faceted.

    Software studies
My bachelor’s thesis was about the way in which the development process of apps for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android influence the way in which the devices on which these operating systems run are being used. What I found interesting is the way in which software (in the case operating systems) determines the users’ actions on a device.

Other: I am also interested in computer hardware, I’ve been tinkering with computers since I was young, so there lies another bit of my interest.

  • Class of September 2012: Time to apply for a tutor! - new post   28 weeks 4 days ago

    First Choices:

    Game Culture
I’m mostly interested in (video) games. The most interesting genre’s, to me, are sport-games, MMORPG’s and Edutainment games. I play videogames myself on a regularly basis and I would love to work at a gaming/game development company. The gaming culture as such is an ever growing area of entertainment and education… It never gets old!

    E-Learning – Pervasive Games – Serious Games
Learning through (video) games is, according to me, the future of education. How these develop, what their benefits and drawbacks are, how these influence our education and culture.

    Gamification
I’m not a real business sort of guy but I find the concept that game elements are used to sell products or to promote a brand an fascinating topic of contemporary culture. The implementations and possibilities are amazing and they are becoming more and more the norm.

    Secondary Choices:

    Animation
Especially the full-length feature animation movies are interesting to watch and research.
I’m interested in the creation of such animation movies and how people really immerse themselves in animated characters.

    Augmented Reality
I just wrote about Project Google Glass, a augmented reality Head Mounted Display. I’m really interested in how this Google Project will develop further and how other augmented reality companies are going to react on this technology.

    Virtual Worlds
Besides augmented reality I find virtual realities fascinating. Especially when a virtual reality comprises a whole world. As the technologies to develop and explore these kind of worlds become more effective, the more is going to be possible in virtual worlds and the more interesting it gets.

    Motivation
The development of new technologies, new ways of communicating and the desire to collect data at ANY time; why do people love this? Well, that's not a research question, but it contradicts the fact that people struggling with these technologies. That's what I see in my work (working with governmental institutions to find solutions for online communication), but also in theories: the eternal debate about the relation between technology and humans (media philosophy).
Second, the ubiquitous of technologies and devices seem to solve problems and create a new world where everything is possible (virtual worlds). What do we create in this world and what's new in these ways of representing?

I am mostly interested in these themes to think critical and to find ways to investigate/solve existing problems in:
    - policy making (technocracy?)
    - social organizations (do we have to learn people how to live in a mediated world?)
    - identity and the constructing of the SELF. (the existentialistic question regarding to technologies and media)
    - television, NPO (a mass medium in a 'new media era': what are the challenges and opportunities?)

And finally, I am not interested in questions focused on: 'how can we use social/new media to achieve our goals/X/etc.'

KEYWORDS media philosophy - (new) media literacy - (digital) identity - media art - photography - new media archeology

MOTIVATION New media fascinate me. It is a relatively new way for people to behave, express, write, see, and most importantly, live. The conversion from offline to online in most Western societies is blurring; they are morphing into one form, undistinguishable. Social lives change, commercial patterns change, awareness changes, art changes - everything changes under the influence of new media. I find this extremely fascinating and have a very strong interest for the philosophical consequences of the (de)virtualization of humanity.

For game studies, I am now writing an essay on the gamification of the necessities of life, which fits in the School of Life tradition. My essay for software studies explores the cinemagraph in retrospect, grabbing back to the roots of the motion image, whilst discovering the nostalgic and magical appeal of this type of image, connecting it to Barthes' writings about photography.

I like philosophy. From Plato to Schopenhauer and Nietzsche to Barthes and everything in between; still/forever exploring. I am very much hoping to combine this interest with my master thesis and internship.

Based on my previous educational experience in communications management and my personal interest in political campaigning I have dealt a lot with the influence of media on the political system in the past. It was my goal to bridge political communication in election campaigns to new media in my bachelor thesis. During my thesis I became really interested in how people communicate through social media and how these ways of communication affect offline interaction. As a result, I would love to write my master thesis on the influence of new media and especially social media on communication structures between individuals on a very personal level. The question for me is: Is there a change or development in the way we communicate and interact with each other which is caused by online communication?

Here are some initial questions that came to mind and that could help to give a more concrete idea of my research interest:
    - Is there a value system of communication modes, e.g. is a letter more valuable than a Facebook message and if yes why?
    - Does this depend on variables such as age, sex, education and so on?
    - Are there separate „communication worlds“(on- and offline) which coexist or do they interfere with each other? If so, in which way and why?
    - How does social media communication affect relationships due to communication?
    - Public vs. Private
    - Social connectivity from a quantitative and a qualitative perspective

So as key words I would choose: Media Philosophy, Social Media and Identity

    Best

    key words:
digital archives/ interface culture & design/ design processes
    social media (+ marketing)

    MOTIVATION PRIMARY
These key words reflect best what interests me at the moment. Currently, I am writing a paper on the Windows Phone tiles; these new developments within the interface-world interest me a lot. I am very much interested in how these interface systems affect the user, especially when an interface has been changed radically. I am also interested in design processes in general, like how one (properly) can form a newspaper page, web page, archiving system or an interface. Moreover, I am very much interested in digital archiving – how one can properly archive i.e. create an understandable system in which it is easy to find stored files via proper tagging, making good connections and so forth.

    MOTIVATION SECONDARY
I am also interested in social media for company branding/ marketing ends. I think there is a high demand for people with that kind of practical knowledge at the moment: the exact influence of social media on people and how that can be used by a company.

    Dear faculty,

As always it is difficult to precisely narrow down my interests, when there are so many interesting topics of research within our field. The list of keywords is therefore rather long I deem, but I shall try to explain my interests more clearly underneath. The keywords are:

augmented reality, digital cartography, interface culture & design, locative media, media philosophy, network theory and politics, urban culture, virtual worlds

As is perhaps clear from them, there is a strong focus on the interplay between the 'real' world (locative media, urban culture, cartography) and the virtual world (virtual worlds, augmented reality). To this there is both a rather practical component, as in; how is the virtual communicated to the user (interface design), or the physical world translated into virtual artifacts (representation), and a much more philosophical approach on the notions of place and time in a hybrid world. Personally I usually end up taking a more philosophical stance in my papers, drawing on theories, rather than on current developments/cases. I'll be looking to do further research on this reciprocal relation between digital and physical and the agency exerted by and through them.

I hope this has made somewhat clear what my main interest is.

    With kind regards,

When I started this Master’s degree course I was almost completely blank about the direction I wanted to move in. In spite of all the input I got in the last two months, it’s still hard for me to make a clear decision. I have one very vague idea, which I would like to work out during the New Media Archaeology course in the third teaching period. At the Hogeschool van Amsterdam I teach the course Media History in which we look at the historical circumstances that have caused changes in the media landscape (and how these circumstances have influenced people’s cognition and behaviour). What I would very much like to do is find a way to match this to the way new media are viewed upon at this moment (including myths and prejudices). Like I said: it’s very vague, but I hope to work it out some more over the next few months.

If this idea doesn't add up I’m also interested in social media and the creation of identity. We feel social media provide us more freedom to express our identity, but are we not shaped by the Software ourselves? And how does our online identity differ from our real life identity? Especially adolescents state that they observe different manners online than offline. What does that mean for society as a whole?

digital archives, digital heritage, digital visual culture, data visualization, gender / ethnicity, identity, interface culture , media archeology, media philosophy, migration, network theory and politics, (new) media art, (new) media literacy, critical thinking, open data / privacy, participatory culture, social media, software studies, urban culture, youth culture

Looking at the keywords listed here I realize it is still a lot. I will try to clarify what I am looking for in an internship / possible thesis subject / future job.

My main interests lie within the fields of (re) presentation, media literacy and the influence of media (and technology) on cultural practice and vice versa. Besides that I am interested in / intrigued by the currently very popular discussion whether or not (experimental) arts, cultural projects and certain studies are “useful” even if they are not financially profitable. Based on previous work experience I know I eventually want to find an internship / job that is socially relevant and preferably non-commercial or at least not focused on profit making. I would love to continue doing research like I do in this master and to maintain the space to think critically within a professional context. One of the things I would like to do for instance is to explore the possibilities of adding and / or improving critical thinking and media literacy courses in standard high school curricula. But this is just one example of the possible things I could imagine. A subject that also has my interest that got re-fueled at the Impakt symposium we just attended is the approach of subjects from different cultural perspectives.

Maybe these examples still seem very broad but I don’t see (new) media as separate from other aspects of everyday life, at least not the way I like to study it. I think it would be very helpful if there could be a tutor assigned to me who knows more about the fields of for instance education and policy making or has contacts at / knowledge of non-governmental advisory bodies.

Note: I am doing this master part-time, when I will start with my internship / thesis hasn’t been decided yet. I would like to set up a plan at the end of the second block if possible.

    WHAT I WROTE/WHAT I AM WRITING NOW
In the pre-master I wrote a paper related to the idea of the Filter Bubble, for the media philosophy course I constructed a critique on political polls, and in my BA thesis I focused on television as a gatekeeper of news in the age of digital and networked media.

This first block of the master I am writing two papers of which one is about playability and political agency in the Second Screen and the other paper is about reduction and implicit/explicit loss of data in social network visualizations.

    RECURRING THEMES
When looking at the papers I wrote in the pre-master and the papers I am writing now, I find recurring themes: somehow, they all seem to be revolving around knowledge, ethics and/or politics.

    network theory and politics

I am, as I like to think, a designer. I like to create, be original, work with colours. I like to find out why people think like they do and it is very interesting to see what influence media can have on this. Not only do they influence representations but they also have the power to alter a society. What I find especially interesting is the feeling people have when dealing with media. Of course this seems quite abstract but I think that the reception of media is something that is underrepresented in media studies. Questions like what the influence is of a ‘pretty’ design, which are directly applicable to practice. I am mostly interested in the human factor of media; I think a technology offers a space for people to communicate but that there will always be a part of traditional human communication visible in new technologies.
